Man charged in connection with fatal assault of elderly man in Co Waterford

Man will appear before court in Waterford on Wednesday morning

Just after 6pm on Monday evening, gardaí and emergency services were called to the scene at a home in Cappagh in Dungarvan.

A man, aged in his 40s, has been charged in connection with the fatal assault of an elderly man in rural Co Waterford.

He is due to appear before Carrick-on-Suir District Court at 10.30am on Wednesday.

Gardaí and paramedics were called to a house on a large estate near Dungarvan, west Waterford, at around tea-time on Monday, where they discovered a man, aged in his 70s, outside the house with “serious injuries”.

A man was arrested at the scene and was taken away for questioning.

The scene was secured pending the arrival of forensic experts and a state pathologist.

A Garda HQ statement said:” An Garda Síochána are investigating all of the circumstances of a fatal assault that occurred in the townland of Cappagh, Dungarvan, Co Waterford on the evening of Monday April 13.” 

It said that shortly after 6pm gardaí and emergency services responded to an incident that occurred outside the residential property.

“A male, aged in his 70s, was discovered with serious injuries and was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene,” it said. 

It said his remains were removed to University Hospital Waterford mortuary for a post mortem, which would assist in the investigation.

It confirmed that a male, aged in his 40s, was arrested at the scene and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Gardaí said the scene was preserved for forensic examination.
