Breaking: Micheal Healy-Rae hospitalised after being assaulted in Dublin city centre

Gardaí are investigating an alleged assault on Independent Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae while he was in his car in Dublin city centre on Wednesday.

It is understood that Mr Healy-Rae has been admitted to St Vincent’s Hospital for his injuries.

A video showing the TD being taken out of his branded car has been shared on social media.

It is understood that Mr Healy-Rae was stopped at traffic lights in the city centre after leaving the Dáil.

It is alleged that an individual started shouting at the TD before approaching the open window of the car.

Gardaí from nearby Kevin Street station were called to the scene by passers-by, and arrived on the scene within minutes. It is thought that the incident happened near the Coombe Hospital.

Sources close to Mr Healy-Rae said he was moved to a Garda car from his own car to be brought to Kevin Street station to wait for an ambulance.

He was receiving treatment in St Vincent’s Hospital for unknown injuries on Wednesday evening.

In a statement, gardaí said that shortly after 4pm on Wednesday, officers from Kevin Street station "responded to reports of an incident on Cork Street, Dublin. 

"It is understood that a male motorist in his late 50s was approached and assaulted by a lone male while stopped in traffic.

"The injured man was brought to Kevin Street station, where he received medical treatment. His injuries are not life-threatening.

"No arrests have been made and inquiries are ongoing." 

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone who may have camera footage from the area at the time, to contact them.

The incident comes just a day after a man in his 60s was arrested at the National Ploughing Championships after he allegedly attempted to assault Taoiseach Micheál Martin.
