Gardaí are set to launch a murder investigation after a man died following a fatal assault in Cork city centre.

At approximately 7.50pm, gardaí and emergency services responded to reports that a man had suffered injuries following a suspected stabbing incident near a property at Camden Court on Carroll's Quay and Knapp's Square.

It is understood the man, a Ukrainian national, went out to get something to eat after work, but returned home to his wife having being stabbed.

Emergency services attended to the injured man at the scene before he was pronounced dead.

A Garda spokesperson said: "His remains have been removed to Cork University Hospital. 

"The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and an autopsy will take place in due course."

A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Watercourse Road Garda Station. 

A Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to support the family of the deceased.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward, particularly taxi drivers and motorists in the area at the time.

Anyone who was in Devonshire Street, Knapps Square, Lower John Street areas of Cork city on Monday, March 16 between 7.30pm and 9pm and who may have camera footage (including home security and dash-cam) is asked to provide this footage to investigating Gardaí.
