Construction has officially begun on 18 homes in Macroom, alongside a purpose-built home for people living with brain injuries.

The €8.5m housing development in Masseytown is scheduled for completion in 2027 and will deliver 10 two-bedroom and eight one-bedroom units for older people currently on Cork County Council’s housing waiting list.

In addition, a five-bedroom house will be built for ABI Ireland to support people with acquired brain injuries. The home will form a “key part of the development” and reflect a growing focus on inclusive housing solutions to meet a range of needs, including long-term disability supports.

Tuath Housing will manage the development, which is funded through the Department of Housing’s Capital Assistance Scheme.

Speaking at the sod-turning event, the Mayor of Cork County, Cllr Mary Linehan Foley, said the project will help people remain connected to their communities.

“Soon, this site will be replaced by 18 much-needed social homes for older persons, alongside a five-bed communal residence for people living with acquired brain injuries to enjoy a high-quality life through their established connections within the community,” said Cllr Linehan Foley.

Director of Service for Housing in Cork County Council, Keith Jones, added: “In meeting the challenges of housing supply, Cork County Council has successfully provided homes through a variety of delivery streams across our county, and this is evident today with the beginning of the construction of these new build specialist housing units through the Capital Assistance scheme here in Macroom”.
