Seventeen counties are under a fog warning on Sunday morning, with Met Éireann warning of "hazardous travelling conditions".

The status yellow weather warning is in place until 10am and impacts Cork, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Clare, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford, Galway, Leitrim, and Roscommon.

"Areas of dense fog or freezing fog possible, leading to impaired visibility and hazardous travelling conditions," Met Éireann warned.

The fog will clear through the morning, leaving a dry day for many with bright or sunny spells and just occasional showers, mainly in the east.

This afternoon, outbreaks of rain will develop in the west and southwest, while there will be further rain this evening. Temperatures will reach highs of 5C to 9C on Sunday before falling to lows of 1C overnight.

Monday will see a cloudy and wet start for most, with widespread outbreaks of rain and drizzle.

Met Éireann says the rain will start to clear northwards through the afternoon with drier and brighter conditions extending from the southwest, while temperatures will reach highs of 9C.

Monday night will be "clear, cold, and dry" for many, with areas of fog developing in some places. It will be cold, with temperatures of -2C to 2C expected and patches of frost and ice forming.

Towards morning, outbreaks of rain will develop in the southwest with freshening winds.

Heading into Tuesday, areas of fog "will clear through the morning as it becomes breezy with outbreaks of rain", which will be heavy at times.

Met Éireann said that overall this week, it will be generally unsettled with rain and showers each day.
