Cork City Fire Brigade crews came to the assistance of a dog who got into a rough situation while out swimming in the River Lee on Sunday.

The dog had become stuck in the water close to the Port of Cork 2000 Garden on the Lower Glanmire Road yesterday evening.

After the distressed dog was noticed by some passersby, firefighters from Cork City Fire Brigade were called to the scene.

After arriving at the riverside, one firefighter entered the water himself, comforted the dog, and managed to attach a harness.

The pup, whose name is ‘Ban’, was then placed onto a scoop stretcher and safely lifted out of the water a few minutes later.

In a post on social media, Cork City Fire Brigade said the rescue team were "delighted to say the four-legged swimmer is now safe and sound" thanks to the "quick action and teamwork" of those involved.

"Huge thanks to the alert bystanders who raised the alarm, and hats off to our crew for their professionalism and compassion on every rescue — whether it’s two legs or four," the Fire Brigade team said.
