Roy Keane has announced the arrival of his third grandchild with a rare personal post to his 2.3 million Instagram followers.

The former Manchester United captain and Sky Sports pundit shared a sweet photo on Thursday evening of himself cradling the newborn, adding his trademark dry wit in the caption: "My new grandson, big baby."

The 53-year-old Cork native, who lives a famously private life off the pitch, gave fans a glimpse into his softer side with the heartwarming snap, which quickly racked up thousands of likes and congratulatory messages.

Among those sending well wishes were fellow football stars and colleagues, including Manchester City ambassador Shaun Wright-Phillips and Keane's The Overlap co-host Gary Neville.

Keane and his wife of 28 years, Theresa Doyle, share five children – Leah, Caragh, Aidan, Shannon, and Alanna – and now have three grandchildren.
