Cork and Kerry have received a significant portion of the latest greenway funding, with Cork allocated €7m and Kerry €8.25m.

Nationwide, €67m is being provided this year for greenways and active travel infrastructure through Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

In Cork, the funding will support progress on several projects, including the M28 project through Ringaskiddy, the Mallow-Dungarvan route, the Midleton-Youghal Greenway, the South Cork Greenway (Cork to Kinsale), and the West Cork Greenway (Cork to Schull).

Kerry’s €8.25m allocation includes €7m for the 32km South Kerry Greenway from Glenbeigh to Cahersiveen.

Other projects include developing the final section from Cahersiveen to Reenard Point, linking the Tralee and Listowel Greenways, and expanding the Tralee to Fenit Greenway.

The Cockleshell Road to the Spa Greenway will also be developed.

Other counties in the region also received funding, with Limerick getting €1.15m, Clare €1.85m, Tipperary €625,000, and Waterford €1m.

While the overall €67m allocation is down from the €72m provided in 2024 for 70 greenway projects, it supplements the €293m active travel allocation announced in January.

The funding will support nearly 60 greenway schemes, including infrastructure on national roads and progress on the National Cycle Network, which outlines 3,500 km of cycling corridors across Ireland.

Minister of State and Cork TD Jerry Buttimer praised the investment, stating:

"Greenways have been a tremendous success for rural Ireland, showcasing our beautiful landscape, bringing visitors to overlooked areas, and helping small local businesses thrive."

He added that greenways offer valuable outdoor recreational space for all community members and welcomed the continued development of new and expanded routes.

TII Chief Executive Peter Walsh emphasized the government's commitment to active travel, stating:

"The 2025 greenway funding highlights the commitment of the Department of Transport and the Government to deliver active travel options throughout the country."
