Cork council progressing with next phase of major housing project on northside of city

Contract worth €13m will deliver 37 homes on Boyce's Street

Cork City Council is pressing ahead with the next phase of a major housing project, with 37 more homes set to be built at a site on Boyce’s Street on the northside of the city.

It has gone out to tender for a contract worth €13m to deliver the homes as part of phase three of the plan to redevelop the area.

Existing homes, many of which were derelict, have already been demolished to make way for the new homes planned.

And many of the units earmarked for the site have already been built in recent years as City Hall progressed the development, with the third phase of building set to deliver a range of two- and three-bedroom homes across apartments, maisonettes and terraced homes.

“The development consists of the construction of 37 number new residential units on a brownfield site adjacent to Boyce's Street, Cork City,” the council said. “There are a total of six residential blocks.

“The site of the proposed development is located on the northside of Cork City, off Upper Cattle Market Street. The development is located 900m west of St Patrick's Bridge. The existing dwellings on the site having been demolished as part of an enabling works contract.” 

Cork City Council has indicated it will award the contract on April 21. From that date, it said it expected the houses to be completed within a timeframe of 28 months.

As part of Cork City Council’s housing delivery action plan, it aimed to build 3,732 new social homes between the start of 2022 and the end of 2026. That includes 1,275 homes in the next two years.

According to figures released by Sinn Féin TD Thomas Gould late last year, there was a pipeline of 1,379 social homes across Cork City, with the projects ranging from early planning to having builders on site.

Mr Gould said some of these homes listed in the pipeline had not progressed since 2019 and therefore should not be included in the figures.

Furthermore, the figures suggested progress had “stalled” on sites that would deliver 864 homes for 12 months or more.

"As we enter into a new Dáil term, the housing crisis continues to worsen in Cork," he said.
