Violent clashes witnessed inside and outside of a supermarket have shocked the community on Cork City's northside.

Video shared on social media shows a small group of balaclava-clad men inside the SuperValu in Hollyhill wildly swinging what appear to be metal bats at a pair of men on the other side of one of the shop's counters.

One of the men behind the counter only narrowly avoids being struck.

The video cuts off as three of the men involved back out of the store holding weapons and their mobile phones while a group of the store's staff plead with them to leave.

A second video, seen by the Irish Examiner, shows a crowd of men fleeing as another man drives a pickup truck in their direction before crashing into a car in the supermarket's parking area.

The violent scenes are understood to be linked to a feud between two groups in the area.

Newly elected TD for Cork North Central Ken O'Flynn said he was "saddened and appalled" by what had unfolded at the supermarket.

Mr O'Flynn said he had witnessed and received information about "multiple reports of shocking acts of antisocial behaviour across various parts of the city — north, south, east, and west" in recent weeks.

"We must advocate for more boots on the ground and improved resources to combat crime effectively," he said.

Mr O'Flynn added that it was time "for us to unite as a community to address these pressing issues and ensure that our local spaces, like Supervalu, remain safe and welcoming for everyone".

A garda spokesperson told the Irish Examiner: "Gardaí were alerted to reports of a disturbance that occurred at a shopping centre in Hollyhill, Cork.

"At approximately 4.30pm, gardaí attended the scene where a large number of persons had gathered and brought the matter under control.

"Investigations are ongoing."
