Valentia and Ballycotton lighthouses are among seven Irish lighthouses featured in a new tourism partnership to "bring the beauty of our iconic lighthouse experiences to life," and boost tourism opportunities across Ireland.

The lighthouses will be included in a series of short videos and pictures promoted by Tourism Ireland in collaboration with Great Lighthouses of Ireland, led by Irish Lights.

The partnership aims to promote tourism within Ireland, while marketing diverse locations across the country.

Irish Lights operates 65 lighthouses across the country in a number of coastal locations, with many of the buildings now being regenerated as heritage buildings with a tourism focus.

In 2023, the lighthouses welcomed around 384,000 visitors, with over 50% of visitors to larger sites coming from overseas.

Of the seven featured lighthouses, three are located within Munster: Ballycotton, Co. Cork; Valentia Island, Co. Kerry; and Loop Head, Co. Clare.

The four other lighthouses included in the promotion consist of Blacksod, Co. Mayo; Fanad, Co. Donegal; and both Rathlin West and Blackhead, located in Co. Antrim.

The short videos aim to “highlight some of the unique characteristics and charm of the lighthouses,” while showcasing the amenities and experiences available near each lighthouse.

Alice Mansergh, Chief Executive of Tourism Ireland, shared her delight in partnering with the “iconic” buildings, which will be preserved for future tourism.

“Lighthouses provide an opportunity for overseas visitors to explore our maritime heritage, witness breathtaking sunsets, capture memorable photographs, and immerse themselves in the vibrant activities of surrounding regions.

"The videos showcase seven distinct areas around the island of Ireland, where prominent lighthouses serve as beacons for exciting activities, culinary experiences, and unique lodging options,” she said.

Bobby Kerr, Chairperson of Great Lighthouses of Ireland, described the move as a “fantastic investment” by Tourism Ireland in the Great Lighthouses of Ireland initiative.

“It brings the beauty of our iconic lighthouse experiences to life and showcases the incredible experiences in the surrounding areas."

“These stunning visuals will introduce Ireland’s lighthouses to a global audience, inviting more visitors to experience their unique charm and history,” he said.
