Woman, 30s, killed in Tipperary collision named locally

The woman who was killed in a two-car collision in south Tipperary on Friday night has been named locally as 37-year-old Claire Kavanagh. 

Ms Kavanagh, who was a native of Carrick on Suir died and several others were injured in the two-vehicle crash in South Tipperary. It happened at approximately 10pm on the N24 in Kilsheelan on Friday. 

Ms Kavanagh's cousin tonight paid a heartfelt tribute to her "best friend". In a post on social media, Haleigh Kavanagh Walsh wrote: "You see these articles all the time and never think it’s going to be one of your own you’re reading about. I love you forever Claire, give me and our family the strength we need to get through this’’.

Locals described Claire as "such a genuinely lovely girl’’. 

One friend wrote "You’ve always been a big part of everyone’s life who ever knew you, so positive, jolly and caring. May you rest in peace. You were obviously too good for this world’’. 

Locals were tonight were comforting Claire’s husband Anthony, her young son and extended family in the tight-knit community. 

No funeral arrangements have been made as yet. 

Her body was taken to University Hospital Waterford where a postmortem examination is due to take place on Saturday evening. 

Ms Kavanagh's death brings to 56 the number of fatalities on Irish roads so far this year.

The driver of the car - a man in his 40s - was also taken to UHW, for treatment for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at this time. 

The driver and two passengers in the second car were all aged in their late teens. The three teenagers - two young men and one young woman - were taken to hospital for treatment for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening. No other injuries have been reported.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam), and were travelling in the area of the N24 at Kilsheelan, Co  Tipperary, on Friday, March 29, between 9.30pm and 10.10pm are asked to make this footage available to gardaí.
