Flood warnings have been issued for Cork City for Saturday as "very high astronomical Spring Tides" are expected.

Met Éireann says "unusually" high tides will continue out through Tuesday with the possibility of coastal flooding for all coasts.

Businesses and householders are being advised to take necessary precautions to protect their property as high tides are forecasted to cause localised flooding along low-lying quays.

These include:

  • Morrison’s Quay;
  • Mathew Quay;
  • Mathew Street;
  • Union Quay;
  • Trinity Bridge;
  • South Terrace;
  • Rutland Street;
  • Sawmill Street;
  • Lavitt's Quay;
  • Kyrl's Street;
  • Kyrl's Quay;
  • Crosses Green;
  • Proby’s Quay;
  • Sharman Crawford St;
  • Wandesford Quay.

The period of high tides are expected from Saturday until Tuesday, March 12.

High tide is expected at 4:35am and 5pm on Saturday and at 5:20am and 5:40pm on Sunday.

A spokesperson for Cork City Council said its Flood Assessment Team is monitoring the situation closely and will continue to issue regular updates on its X/Twitter account and website.

Weather Outlook Nationwide

Meanwhile, Friday started out dry with some isolated showers. It should remain cloudy through the day with some bright or sunny spells expected at times.

Some drizzle is expected to develop later in the evening, along the southwest coast, as Met Éireann says unusually high tides will see the possibility of coastal flooding.

It should then stay dry in most areas with a mix of cloud and clear spells with some light rain and drizzle. Temperatures are set to drop as low as 1C with "unsually high tides" bringing potential coastal flooding for all coasts.

Saturday then should see scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle, with coastal flooding expected as well for all coasts.

Saturday night then will see a good deal of cloud with further outbreaks of rain while it remains dry with some clear spells in the north and west.

Sunday will see more rain, especially in the east, and continue into the night although clear spells are expected later in the west.

Looking into next week, Monday will see more rain, drizzle, and cloud which will clear by Tuesday morning as sunny spells and some light showers develop in the afternoon.

Looking further into next week, Met Éireann says current indications suggest that it will turn more unsettled for midweek with rain and showers.
