Gardaí in Killarney are investigating an alleged case of animal cruelty in relation to a number of dogs, as well as a horse.
It is understood that complaints were received by the authorities about suspected maltreatment of the animals which were in a domestic setting near Killarney town centre.
Lack of proper feeding as well as maltreatment are suspected, while a post-mortem examination is being carried out on one of the animals, a horse that was discovered in a green area.
It is not clear if the owner actually resides in the area and enquiries are taking place. The Kerry Society for the Prevention of Animal Cruelty, and the veterinary department of Kerry County Council are liaising with gardaí.
Gardaí were alerted to the scene on Wednesday and discovered the horse in a very poor condition in the green area. They alerted the pound and veterinary personnel arrived with the intention of impounding the animal and treating him.
However the horse, which was tethered, died just as council veterinary personnel arrived. The horse was removed immediately and a post-mortem is taking place on the animal in in Tralee.
The animal in question was not involved in Killarney's famed jarvey business.
Investigations are continuing.
