Bay on Rottnest Island near Perth. Mr Lucey is understood to be in his early 30s and emigrated to Australia a few years ago.

Prayers are being said in a Cork suburb for a young local man who got into difficulties off the east coast of Australia.

Ballincollig AFC posted on its Facebook page that the family and friends of former player Damien Lucey are asking for prayers after he unfortunately got into difficulty in the ocean off Perth, Australia on Monday.

It was not clear at time of going to print if he has been found.

Mr Lucey is understood to be in his early 40s and emigrated to Australia a few years ago.

Originally from Rosewood, Ballincollig, he went to school at the local Coláiste Choilm.

He is from a highly respected and popular Ballincollig family.

Ballincollig AFC posted: "Please pray for Damien to be returned home to his family and friends.

"Damien, his sisters Carol and Eleanor all played soccer with Ballincollig AFC from underage to adulthood.

"Our prayers are with Damien, his mother Frankie, sisters Greta, Marie, Carol, Eleanor, and his Brother Paddy, that Damien may be found and returned home to his family.

"Many people in the area will know his brother Paddy who is heavily involved in Ballincollig ladies GAA football and is bar manager at HQ Bar in the town’s Main Street."
