Two seriously injured following two-car collision in Cork
Two people have been seriously injured following a collision in Co Cork.
The two-car collision occurred in Fota, near Cobh, at 12.40pm on Wednesday.
The two people were taken to Cork University Hospital with serious injuries.
Gardaí said the road is closed and diversions are in place.
Long delays have been reported in the area as a result of the collision.
Following the collision, Cork East TD Seán Sherlock said the R624 road that links Cork and Cobh is "less than adequate".
“It is no longer tenable for there to be a less than adequate access road such as the R624 road to be in existence.
“This incident and many others like it point to the absolute need now as a national priority to build a new road to access the island.
The only alternative route to Cobh from Cork is to take the ferry, which is “not tenable” according to Mr Sherlock.
“It (the road) is the only way in unless you take the ferry, which is not tenable.
“If there is a major incident in Cobh, of catastrophic proportions, having the R624 is inadequate and sub-par for the times we live in.”
