One of the first Chinese restaurants to open in Cork has announced it is closing its doors after 60 “wonderful years”.

The Tung Sing opened on Patrick Street in 1964 and soon became a hit with customers.

Unlike many food chains, it stood the test of time and had a steady flow of loyal customers for six decades.

In a post on social media, the restaurant said: “After 60 wonderful years trading and operating on Patrick Street and serving all the people of Cork with their favourite dishes, it is with great sadness and regret that we must make this post.

“Due to the constantly increasing cost and operating expenses that we have incurred we are heartbroken to inform people that the Tung Sing on Patrick Street will close its doors for the last time tomorrow evening, Saturday 6th January.

“We wish to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all of our loyal customers and patrons who have supported us constantly during our time here and will forever cherish all the wonderful memories that all of you have created in the restaurant.

“Thank you to all our customers from all the staff and management. The Tung Sing, A Cork Tradition!”.

Dozens of support messages have flooded the company’s Facebook page wishing staff and management well.

Earlier, it was revealed that another popular Cork City restaurant has closed its doors for good after five years in business.

Upon opening in 2019, Pigalle Kitchen, at 111 Barrack Street, quickly gained popularity among Cork patrons for its combination of varied local produce, craft cocktails, and sustainably produced wines.

Just last year it made the Sunday Times list of the 100 places to eat in the country.

But in a post on Instagram, the team behind the restaurant confirmed its official closure.

"We are absolutely heartbroken to be announcing the official closure of Pigalle," the team said.

"We are so grateful to have had the chance to do what we love for so long, and we are extremely appreciative for the incredible support we've had since we opened in 2019."

The team thanked all staff, past and present, for their contribution to Pigalle since 2019.

"You will all be so fondly remembered. Goodbye for now."

Responding to a comment under its announcement, the team also said any vouchers bought for the restaurant recently would be honoured or refunded in full at Tom Barry's next door.
