Garda firearm discharged as vehicles pursuing lorry in Cork City are damaged

A man has been arrested following a garda pursuit in Cork City on Wednesday after reports of a stolen lorry.
A shot from a Garda firearm was discharged during the course of the incident.
Gardaí received a report of the theft of the vehicle from the Bandon area on Tuesday night. The lorry was discovered in the Togher area on Wednesday morning.
Gardaí said it failed to stop when directed to do so and a "managed containment operation was put in place". This saw multiple Garda units involved before it ended in the Forge Hill area.
A man in his 30s was arrested by gardaí in connection with the incident.
He is currently being detained at a Garda station in the Southern Region under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
During the incident, a firearm was also discharged, which was confirmed by the Garda Ombudsman (Gsoc).
A spokesperson told the : "I can confirm that in line with standard procedures, Gsoc received a notification from An Garda Síochána of the discharge of a firearm during a vehicle containment incident in Cork today."
A Garda spokesperson added that two garda vehicles were damaged during the pursuit. No injuries were reported, they added.
"Investigations are ongoing at this time," the spokesperson added.
