Two people dead after crashes in Cork and Waterford

A woman in her 80s and a man in his 20s have died after collisions on Friday and Saturday

A man in his 20s has died following a single vehicle collision in Co Waterford yesterday.

The incident occurred on the N29, Port Road, shortly after 10.30pm.

The two occupants of the car, both men in their 20s, were taken by ambulance to University Hospital Waterford.

The driver was later pronounced dead. Injuries to the other passenger are not described as life threatening.

A technical examination of the scene has been arranged, local traffic diversions are in place, and a report will be sent to the coroner.

Gardaí are now appealing for witnesses to come forward, especially any road users who were travelling in the area at the time who may have dashcam footage.

Multi-vehicle Cork collision

Meanwhile, a woman in her 80s has also died following a collision involving an articulated truck and two cars in Crookstown on Friday.

The incident occurred on the N22 at Crookstown at around 9.30am on Friday morning .

The drivers of the cars, two women in their 80s and 50s, and a passenger of one of the cars, a man in his 50s, were all transferred to Cork University for treatment of serious injuries.

The woman in her 80s, who was driving one car has since died from her injuries.

An autopsy is due to take place.

The other man and woman remain in a serious but stable condition at this time, and a technical examination of the scene was completed on Friday.

Gardaí are now appealing to any road users who were travelling in this area between 9.20am and 9.40am and who may have dash-cam footage to make this available to them.

Pedestrian in serious condition

Elsewhere, a pedestrian, in his 20s, is in serious condition following a collision with a car in Meath on Saturday.

The incident occurred on the R147 Dublin Road in Navan town at the junction with Circular Road shortly after 9:30pm.

The pedestrian was treated at the scene and removed by ambulance to hospital.

He is currently receiving treatment at Beaumont Hospital where his condition is understood to be serious. The driver of the car was unharmed.

A full examination of the scene is being carried out by Garda forensic collison investigators, and local diversions are currently in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. 

Those with camera footage from the Dublin Road/Circular Road, Navan at the time of the collision, are asked to make it available to investigating gardaí.

'Shocking' 2023 road death figures

The latest fatalities bring to 158 the total number of people who have died on Irish roads so far this year.

This figure is more than the total recorded during the entirety of 2022.

According to the latest available figures, 38 of those who have died this year were pedestrians, the highest total reported for 15 years.

On Wednesday, minister of state at the Department of Transport, Jack Chambers said the upward trends in road deaths this year have been "shocking" and "a reversal of the significant progress we’ve made from a road safety perspective".

Mr Chambers was speaking alongside Road Safety Authority (RSA) chief executive Sam Waide and Assistant Garda Commissioner Paula Hilman as they made an urgent appeal to road users ahead of the bank holiday weekend.
