A Laois man clocked at 35 km/h over the speed limit while on a six-year driving ban was told he was “very lucky” that all he received was the original fixed penalty notice.

Anthony Bernard Davis (25), Crannagh, Stradbally, Co Laois appeared at Athy District Court on October 27 after he was recorded at 95 km/h in a 60 km/h zone at Tankardstown on March 14.

However, when it was discovered that “he was unable to pay the fine because he doesn’t have a licence,” according to his solicitor Seamus Boyle, it was discovered by the authorities that he had been put off the road for a total of six years on  March 15, 2025 for unspecified reasons.

Smiling to himself, Judge Desmond Zaidan turned towards the defendant.

“You were very lucky they issued a fixed penalty notice because the gardaí could’ve gone a much more serious route,” he noted.

“We’ll leave it at that,” he said generously, before fining him €500 for failure to pay the speeding ticket.
