Murder investigation launched into case of man, 43, missing from Navan for four years

A garda spokesperson said that on Wednesday "based on the entirety of the information available to the investigation team at Navan Garda Station", gardaí have now reclassified the investigation as a murder investigation.

An investigation into the disappearance of 43-year-old Mark Duffy, who was last seen on October 3, 2022 in Navan, has been upgraded to a murder investigation.

In the weeks before his disappearance, Mr Duffy was homeless living in a tent in Navan town.

On the day of his disappearance, Mr Duffy was at the Post Office at the Johnstown Shopping Centre in Navan at 10.50am.

Later on that day at approximately 2:45pm he was seen on CCTV on the Commons Road, Navan, walking into McDermotts Villas Housing Estate which is the last confirmed sighting of him.

Mr Duffy was subsequently reported missing on October 13, 2022 by a family member who became concerned when she hadn’t heard from him.

A Garda missing persons investigation commenced and it was established that there had been no sightings of Mr Duffy since October 3 2022, nor had his phone been used and he had not left the country.

Gardaí subsequently conducted searches of the Navan and River Boyne areas but there have been no sightings of Mr Duffy or evidence of his whereabouts.

Investigation upgraded 

A Garda spokesperson said that An Garda Síochána has maintained an "open and active investigation" into the disappearance of Mr Duffy carried out by "a dedicated investigation team based at Navan Garda Station led by a senior investigating officer".

The spokesperson said that "based on the entirety of the information available to the investigation team at Navan Garda Station", Gardaí have now reclassified the investigation as a murder investigation.

A family liaison officer remains in place for Mr Duffy's family and they have been informed of the update in the case.

Mr Duffy is described as 5’ 8” in height and of broad build with brown hair and blue eyes. 

He walked with a noticeable limp at the time of his disappearance and was wearing dark clothing with a cream hoody underneath, the hood of which was outside his jacket when last seen.

An Garda Síochána continue to appeal to any person with any information on the disappearance and murder of Mark Duffy to contact the Garda investigation team.

"No matter how insignificant you think any information may be, do not assume that it’s not of interest or value to An Garda Síochána or that An Garda Síochána may already have the information," the garda spokesperson said.
