Cork man caught travelling in stolen Lexus finding his time in prison 'quite unpleasant'

Defendant admitted to travelling in another stolen car and handling five stolen watches

A Lexus car which was stolen from Blackrock Road in April was located the following day thanks to a GPS tracker fitted to the vehicle, and now a young man caught travelling in the car has been jailed for nine months.

And his solicitor said the accused had been finding his time in prison “quite unpleasant”.

Judge David Waters imposed that total sentence on Cian Yelverton, of St Rita’s Avenue, Gurranabraher, Cork, at Cork District Court.

The young man pleaded guilty to being a passenger in that car and in June committing the same kind of offence in another stolen car.

He also confessed to five counts of handling stolen property.

The young man admitted allowing himself to be carried in a stolen Lexus car on April 1 on Blackrock Road. 

Sergeant John Dineen said: “The car was fitted with a GPS tracker and tracked down to the service station at Lee Mount Cross, Ballincollig, before 8pm on April 2. 

“CCTV shows Cian Yelverton as a front seat passenger in the car, going into the shop at the service station to pay €20 for petrol.” 

The 22-year-old also pleaded guilty to allowing himself to be carried in a stolen car on June 22 in Glanmire Business Park.

And the following day, he was caught handling five stolen watches.

Defence solicitor Joseph Cuddigan said when he was younger, Mr Yelverton was diagnosed with ADHD: “He is somewhat impulsive and not thinking things through. He has found his time in prison quite unpleasant, sleeping on the floor. He is undertaking now not to repeat any of this type of offending behaviour.”
