A handgun was pointed at the head of a member of staff at a credit union as a robbery was carried out, it was alleged at Cork District Court.

Ballistics tests are to be carried out on what appeared to be a handgun seized by gardaí during the investigation of a case where a man is charged with carrying out an armed robbery at The Lough Credit Union in Cork.

Sergeant Aisling Murphy told Cork District Court directions were not yet available from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

“It is an alleged armed robbery and we are awaiting a firearms and ballistics report,” Sgt Murphy told Judge David Waters.

The judge said regardless of forensics, even if it was found to be an imitation handgun, he still found it to be too serious where it was alleged what appeared to be a gun was pointed at a person’s head.

Sgt Murphy said the allegations in the case were that on May 15, 2026, at 11.30am, gardaí responded to a report of an armed robbery at The Lough Credit Union, Togher Road, where it was alleged a male entered the credit union, wearing all black and fully covered up.

"He approached an elderly female at the cash desk and pointed a handgun at her head and put his arm around her neck. He then threatened the teller to empty the till or he would shoot the female.

"He pointed the gun at the teller and demanded money. In the face of the threat the teller gave the culprit the cash in the till.”

Judge Waters remanded the accused man in continuing custody until July 29 at Cork District Court.
