A young American woman visiting Cork was struck across the head with a walking stick when she was at Kent railway station in Cork, it was alleged in court on Tuesday. Details of the alleged assault causing harm were outlined at Cork District Court, where Sergeant John Dineen said the DPP said it was a suitable case to be dealt with at district court level.

Judge Catherine Ryan heard an outline of the alleged circumstances giving rise to the charge of assault causing harm, and examined a medical report on the injured party and photographs taken of her at the time.

“It is very visible, it is below the hairline. Based on what I have seen, it is an injury to the face which could leave scarring. I am not prepared to accept jurisdiction,” Judge Ryan said.

A book of evidence will now have to be prepared so the case can be sent forward for trial at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.

39-year-old Charles Radise, of Domville Woods, Santry, Dublin, was remanded in custody by Judge Ryan at Cork District Court until June 9.

He is charged with assault causing harm to a woman, who was a tourist in Cork, on March 26 at Kent Station, where she allegedly sustained the laceration.

The accused man was represented by solicitor Eddie Burke.

In his outline of the allegations, Sergeant John Dineen said: “On March 26, gardaí were made aware of an assault that occurred at Kent railway station in Cork.

“It was alleged a female tourist had been attacked with an article, believed to be a walking stick.

“At the scene, details were obtained about the alleged assailant and details of the assault.

“The injured party received a large laceration to the side of her forehead as a result of being struck on the head by the solitary male, requiring hospitalisation. She was taken to Cork University Hospital, where five staples were applied to the wound.

“A person matching the description of the assailant was arrested a short time later nearby. This man was Charles Radise.

“No admissions were made to assault, but he admitted being in the area at the time. He is charged with assault causing harm to a woman who was a tourist in Cork.”
