Cobh murder-accused to apply for bail in High Court next week

A man accused of murdering a father of two in Cobh, Co Cork, is to apply for bail in the High Court next week.

Dylan Scannell, 30, of O'Rahilly Street, Cobh, is charged with the murder of Ian Baitson, 33, at Newtown Road in the town on March 15 last.

Mr Baitson was injured shortly before 9pm in a Eurospar car park and taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead four days later.

Mr Scannell had been remanded in custody following a District Court appearance on March 25.

In July, he was further charged with two additional offences.

Newer charges

One of the newer charges was for the production of a long-bladed sword capable of inflicting serious injury in the course of a dispute and in a manner likely to unlawfully intimidate another person on March 15 at the Eurospar car park.

The other was under money laundering legislation for possessing crime proceeds between August 2023 and March 2024.

Because he faces a murder charge, a bail application must be brought before the High Court in Cloverhill, Dublin.

It was listed there before Ms Justice Karen O'Connor on Thursday, and the court heard a garda witness was expected to object to Mr Scannell's application.

Ms Justice O'Connor adjourned the bail hearing until August 29, when it will have priority on the court's list.
