Man who threw glass bottle at security guard's head jailed for eight months

Injured party needed four stitches to a head wound

The accused admitted assaulting two security guards on the night.

A young man who threw a glass bottle at a security man — splitting his head open — and spat at a second bouncer in a row outside a pub in Cork has been sentenced to eight months in prison.

Adrian Long, aged 25, of 14 Willowbank, Upper Fair Hill, Cork, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault causing harm to a security officer who had to have four stitches to a head wound. He also admitted assaulting another security man by spitting at him.

Sergeant Barry Myers went to the scene of the alleged assaults that night.

Sergeant Gearóid Davis said at Cork District Court: “On March 17, 2023, at around 9pm an assault occurred outside the Vicarstown Bar on North Main St.

“Sgt Barry Myers was on duty at North Main St. He met with the injured party, a security officer for both the Vicarstown Bar and Black Dog premises. He had a sizable laceration to the side of his head and he required hospital treatment.

“An ambulance arrived at the scene. The injured party said he was hit in the head with a glass bottle which was thrown by a man who was ejected from the bar.”

The accused man was convicted four times previously for engaging in threatening behaviour and one count of assault.

Frank Buttimer, defence solicitor, said of the accused: “He was in town socialising with a friend. There was an encounter between his friend and the first security guard. He intervened. In relation to the spitting, he said he was a recipient of spitting and that this was provocative. But he accepts he did his spitting business.

“Another security guard intervened in this. Mr Long wrongly decided to throw a bottle at the original security guard and hit the other security guard.

“He has now been in custody since July 29. He has written a letter of apology to the injured party.”

Judge Olann Kelleher imposed an eight-month sentence for causing harm and a concurrent three months for the spitting assault.

Judge Kelleher said: “He had a previous for assault — he has proven to be a violent man.”
