Surge in the number of younger sex offenders in Irish prisons

Prison bosses have identified a shift in the profile of sex offenders being jailed, with increasing numbers of young men being convicted in the courts.

- Committals increase from around 120 on average per year between 2007 and 2010 to around 170 per year between 2016 and 2019 — an increase of around 40%;
- The number of sex offenders in custody jump from 237 on December 5, 2007, to 599 on May 31, 2022 — an increase of over 150%.
