Ten-day search operation at Westmeath's Lough Ennell stood down after body of man is recovered 

The body of a young man has been recovered from a lake in Co Westmeath following a ten-day, multi-agency search operation.

Gardaí and other agencies had been carrying out searches in the vicinity of Lough Ennell for a man in his 20s who has been reported missing.

The search was stood down on Tuesday after a body was recovered.

The search operation had commenced on Sunday, September 20 and was coordinated by local gardaí and the Garda Water Unit, with assistance from local sub aqua teams, the Civil Defence, the Garda Dog Unit and teams from all over the country.

One charity that had assisted, Mallow Search and Rescue, paid tribute to all involved in the search operation.

“The ten day multi-agency search was stood down earlier today after a body was recovered in Lough Ennell in Co Westmeath.

“We would like to thank local fishermen, the garda divers who recovered the body and to Mallow Search and Rescue volunteers who assisted in the recovery.

“We would also like to send our deepest condolences to the family. May he rest in peace,” they said in a post on social media.

Another charity group involved in the search, Irish Underwater Search & Recovery Unit (IUSRU), said an "incredible effort" had been shown by "every single person who helped" and that it was "humbling to see the amazing community spirit come together when the family needed them most".

The organisation also expressed condolences to the family.
