A 65-year-old woman has been charged with withholding information during a murder investigation.

Detective Sergeant Brian Barron charged Janice Long, of 35 St Michael’s Close, Mahon, Cork, with the offence, which was allegedly committed during the investigation of the murder of 47-year-old Kieran Quilligan.

Mr Quilligan’s skeletal remains were found in East Cork in February 2024 after he went missing in Cork City on September 1, 2023.

The charge of withholding information brought against the 65-year-old relates to a date unknown between September 1, 2023, and February 2, 2024.

The particulars of the charge state that at an unknown location within the State, she did fail, without reasonable excuse, to disclose as soon as was practicable to a member of An Garda Síochána information which she knew or believed might be of material assistance in securing the apprehension, prosecution or conviction of any person for a serious offence, contrary to the Offences Against the State Act.

Sergeant John Dineen said the Director of Public Prosecutions directed trial by indictment.

Judge Valerie Corcoran directed the prosecution disclose evidence to the defendant by July 27 so she could decide on entering a signed plea of guilty or contesting the case, which would necessitate a book of evidence.

Two men were convicted of murdering Kieran Quilligan, following a trial at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Cork.
