Man, 20s, dies and another seriously injured following Galway crash

A young man has died in a collision between a car and a van in Co Galway, becoming the third person to die on Irish roads in less than 24 hours. 

The crash occurred on the N17 at Milltown shortly after 8am on Friday. The driver of the car, a man aged in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy will be carried out at the morgue at University Hospital Galway.

The driver of the van, a man aged in his 50s, was airlifted to University Hospital Galway for treatment of serious injuries.

The road is currently closed between Milltown and Ballindine pending a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Diversions are in place at the Milltown road roundabout in Tuam, Co Galway, and in Ballindine, Co Mayo.

Gardaí are now appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

In a statement, a Garda spokesperson said: "Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 7.45am and 8.15am on Friday 19th September 2025 are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Tuam Garda Station on 093 70840, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station."

Elsewhere, two people lost their lives in separate road traffic incidents in Cork on Thursday.

A cyclist died following a collision involving a truck and a bicycle in Cork City at around 6.15pm. The cyclist, a woman in her 20s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

In Ballycotton, a man in his 40s died after an accident involving a dumper truck. 

It is understood the man was carrying out works in the area when his dumper truck struck him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
