Ireland hits record high of 15,747 people in emergency accommodation in May
In addition, 4,844 children were in emergency accommodation during the same period
There were a record 15,747 people in emergency accommodation at the end of May, new figures show.
The Department of Housing reported that there were 10,903 homeless adults at the end of last month.
In addition, 4,844 children were in emergency accommodation during the same period — the highest number ever recorded in Ireland.
May's total exceeded the previous record of 15,580 people in emergency accommodation set in April.
In a statement, the Dublin Simon Community has said that while the housing crisis is on the political agenda, its “most devastating consequence, homelessness, remains overlooked”.
Catherine Kenny, CEO of the Dublin Simon Community, said there was nothing for people in homelessness in recent weeks, after the Government unveiled their change to rental rules.
“In light of today's numbers, stability must be at the forefront in addressing the chaotic housing market with chronic shortages,” Ms Kenny said.
