Those hoping for the traditional "Leaving Cert weather" look set to be disappointed, as unsettled conditions are expected to mark the start of June.

After a bank holiday weekend that brought warm temperatures alongside heavy rain, the latest Met Éireann forecast predicts more of the same.

Tuesday will bring fresh and breezy weather with a mix of sunshine and scattered showers, and temperatures reaching highs of 16C in some areas.

Similar conditions are expected on Wednesday, with gusty winds, scattered showers and occasional bright spells, as temperatures once again peak at 16C — just as thousands begin their state exams.

Longer spells of rain will develop overnight on Wednesday, clearing by lunchtime on Thursday.

However, Met Éireann also warns that conditions are likely to remain unsettled, with rain or showers expected each day through to next Monday at the earliest.

They add that temperatures will remain below average for early June.

There is some better news in the monthly forecast for June, issued on Friday.

It reads: "A much more settled picture is indicated for Week 2 (June 9 to June 16)  as high pressure to the south builds, keeping low-pressure systems further north.

"Temperatures will likely be around or slightly above normal. Much of the country will be drier than normal though there is the potential for above average amounts in the north, most likely from early in the week."

High pressure is also expected to dominate the third week of June, according to the national forecaster’s predictions.
