Woman, 40s, dies after group struck by car in Kerry

The cross-roads on Blennerville Bridge on the N86 Canal Road has been closed for a full forensic examination.

A woman has been killed after an SUV struck the group she was jogging with in Tralee, Co Kerry this morning.

Her death brings to four the number of people killed on the roads since Friday night.

A garda investigation is now underway into the latest fatality which occurred following a single vehicle incident on the Canal Road in Tralee at around 10am on Sunday.

Gardaí said they and the emergency services responded to reports of a collision involving an SUV vehicle and three pedestrians on the N86, the Canal Road in Tralee.

One of the pedestrians, a woman in her 40s, was treated at the scene and was removed by ambulance to University Hospital Kerry, in critical condition.

However, despite the best efforts of medics, she was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.

The other pedestrians, two adult females, and the motorist, a male in his 80s, were also taken to hospital for treatment.

Their conditions are not thought to be life-threatening.

It is understood that the motorist may have suffered a medical incident in the moments before the collision.

Gardaí said the local coroner has been notified and the scene has been preserved for examination by garda forensic collision investigators and local traffic diversions are in place.

“Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this collision. They are particularly appealing to those with camera footage, including dash-cam recordings, from the area at the time to come forward,” a spokesman said.
