Mother shares 'heartbreaking loss' of son, 5, who died after being hit by car in Co Laois

A five-year-old boy who died in a collision involving a car in Co Laois on Saturday has been named locally as Aaron Hussain. 

He was hit by a car in the Kilminchy area of Portlaoise at around 4.20pm on Saturday.

The boy was fatally injured and removed from the scene to Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise in a serious condition.

He was pronounced dead a short time later. An autopsy will be carried out in due course.

The driver of the car, a woman, aged in her 40s, was not injured.

Locals said Aaron was a junior infant student in the Educate Together school in Portlaoise town and was the son of Tauqir Hussain and Irina Novikova.

His parents are well known in the Portlaoise business community with his dad Tauqir involved in a barber’s shop in Lyster Square. Locals are said to be comforting his parents at this tough time. No funeral arrangements have been made as yet.

A technical examination was due to be carried out by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators on Sunday morning.

Aaron's mother Irina has taken to social media to announce her little boy's passing.

She said: "With deep sorrow, we share the heartbreaking loss of our little son, Aaron. Thank you for your understanding. Rest in peace our little angel."

Gardaí are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

In a statement, a Garda spokesperson said: "Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in Kilminchy, Portlaoise, Co. Laois between 4.00pm and 5.00pm this afternoon are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.
