Over 1,000 gardaí to be deployed in Dublin for Ireland v England Nations League match

Gardaí have outlined a major policing operation ahead of the Ireland vs England UEFA Nations League match at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday. 

The match is set to see over 49,000 people attend with the Garda Commissioner declaring it an "extraordinary event" in the Dublin area. 

Up to 1,100 gardaí of all ranks will be on duty in Dublin City, around the Aviva Stadium, Dublin Airport and other associated areas in the 24 hours of Saturday, September 7. Additional policing will also be provided on September 6 and 8.

Uniformed gardaí will also be assisted by the national public order units, air support unit, mounted unit, armed support unit and more. 

Heavy volumes of traffic are expected in the city centre and the Dublin 4 area throughout the day. The match is due to kick off at 5pm. 

Gardaí are advising those who are planning to attend the stadium to utilise public transport as much as possible. 

"Those who will be using the city are advised to plan their journey in advance and to expect delays and rolling road closures," a Garda spokesperson said.

A cordon will be in effect on the streets that lead to the venue and only accredited vehicles will be allowed to pass through it. 

The following roads will be closed to traffic from 12.15pm onwards: 

  • Lansdowne Park
  • Lansdowne Lane 
  • Lansdowne Road from Shelbourne Road to Herbert Bridge 
  • Herbert Road 
  • Newbridge Avenue 
  • Bath Avenue 
  • Londonbridge Road

These roads then will be closed from 3pm onwards: 

  • The remainder of Lansdowne Road from Shelbourne Road to Pembroke Road 
  • Shelbourne Road 
  • Beatty’s Avenue 
  • Ballsbridge Avenue.

"Other rolling road closures may be required due to security escorts, temporary fan movements, or other non-event road-related incidents," the spokesperson added. 

Parking will also be prohibited at the following locations from 7am on Saturday: 

  • Lansdowne Road – Both sides from Shelbourne Road to Herbert Bridge  
  • Herbert Road – Left side from Herbert Bridge to Tritonville Road
  • Lansdowne Lane – Left side from Shelbourne Road 
  • Shelbourne Road – Both sides from Shelbourne Avenue to The Podium Entrance 
  • Shelbourne Road – Left side from The Podium Entrance to Bath Avenue 
  • Havelock Square – Right side from Bath Avenue to the Entrance Gate 
  • Northumberland Road – Both sides from Lansdowne Road to Haddington Road
