Wicklow Pride is postponing a âmuch anticipatedâ Rainbow Disco following threats of protests as well as receiving âmalicious accusationsâ from some residents in Newtownmountkennedy.
The Rainbow Disco, aimed at teenagers between the ages of 13 and 16, was part of Pride celebrations in Wicklow and was due to take place on Sunday at the Newtownmountkennedy Community Centre.
However, following ârecent threats and actionsâ, organisers for Wicklow Pride said it âmust prioritise the safety and wellbeing of our community, especially our young members.âÂ
Wicklow Pride said it could not in âgood conscienceâ hold its Rainbow Disco event under âsuch hostile conditionsâ and added that the safety and mental wellbeing of their young people comes first.
âWe have faced threats of protests from some residents of Newtownmountkennedy, whilst enduring malicious accusations of being 'paedophiles' and 'groomers',â they said in a statement.Â
âThese baseless attacks are deeply troubling. [On Tuesday), one of our committee members experienced a horrifying invasion of privacy when someone placed a vile note through their letterbox, branding them with that same disgusting accusation.
âThese actions underscore the very reason we need Pride. We stand against hate, bigotry, and ignorance,â the statement added.
Local Social Democrats councillor for the area Danny Alvey said these actions are giving âNewtownmountkennedy a name it does not deserve.â Mr Alvey said it is âabsolutely horrific for the LGBTQ community here in Wicklow and further afieldâ to see these accusations being used.
âIt is also extremely distressing for all of the people of Newtownmountkennedy who I represent and whose doors I have called to over the past few weeks,â he told the Irish Examiner.
He added that the majority of locals in the area "are very accepting inclusive people".
Wicklow Pride chairperson Paddy Bracken invited members of the community to âstand against hatredâ and join them at the Pride parade.
âThe young members of our community need to be protected from these bigots. Wicklow Pride will continue,â Mr Bracken said.
âWe will march on July 6 in Wicklow Town and invite those who stand against hatred to join us. Thank you to all who have come out to support us. Always be your true self.â
