Review group rejects proposal to end prosecution role of gardaí

A recommendation to end the “enormously wasteful” use of garda resources prosecuting the bulk of court cases has been rejected by a high-level group set up to evaluate the proposal.

The Government had initially accepted in principle the recommendation of the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland (CoFPI), outlined in its September 2018 report - but on the basis it would be subject to a detailed review.
