Man dead, another injured, after Christmas Eve shooting incident in Dublin

A man in his 20s has died and another man has been seriously injured following suspected gang-related shooting incident in Dublin.

The incident happened at Browne's Steakhouse in Blanchardstown, Dublin 15, at around 8.10pm on Christmas Eve.

The restaurant was was full of customers at the time, including several families having a Christmas Eve meal. Videos on social media show several customers fleeing the premises as the attack unfolded, with others taking cover below tables. 

Two men were taken to James Connolly Memorial Hospital to receive medical treatment in the wake of the attack.

One man, in his 20s, was pronounced dead in hospital a short time later.

It is understood gardaí are investigating whether the dead man was a participant in the initial attack and was tackled in the aftermath.

The nature of the fatal injuries he sustained has not been confirmed. 

The second man, aged in his 40s, is receiving treatment for gunshot wounds. He remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Gardaí are in the process of gathering CCTV from inside the restaurant in as part of their investigation into the incident.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination and the services of the Office of the State Pathologist have been requested.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said he was "shocked" by news of the incident. 

"Shocked to hear about the shooting today in Blanchardstown in a well known family restaurant I’ve visited many times," he wrote on X.

"Full Garda investigation underway. My thanks to them and solidarity to staff and customers."

Justice Minister Helen McEntee called the attack “disgusting”.

“I deplore the violence in Blanchardstown tonight.

“This viciousness has resulted in unimaginable human suffering this Christmas,” she said in a post on Instagram.

That anyone could perpetrate such violence as families gathered together is especially disgusting.

“I’m thinking of the bereaved, those who were at the scene and indeed all the emergency service personnel working tonight and over Christmas who have to deal with this senseless violence," she said. 

“I call on anyone with information of any kind to contact An Garda Siochana.”
