Bomb disposal unit called to Cork house to deal with historic item

The scene in Glasheen where a suspicious device was found on Tuesday.

A number of houses were evacuated in Cork city this afternoon due to a potential bomb threat.

A suspicious device was discovered at a residence on Hartlands Avenue in Glasheen on Tuesday.

A garda cordon has been put in place and the Irish Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal have been requested to deal with the incident.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that enquiries are ongoing at this time.

A spokesman for the Defence Forces said: "This afternoon Defence Forces EOD experts responded to a request for assistance from An Garda Síochána, in relation to a potential explosive device. 

Following an assessment by our EOD team, this device, a historical munition, was rendered stable and removed to a safe location. Once removed it was destroyed in a controlled demolition. 

"This operation has concluded and all elements are back in barracks. The team were on scene at 15.05hrs and mission complete at 16.40hrs with no requirement to evacuate."
