A private meeting is being held for women and families affected by the Cervical Check scandal this evening.

Private meeting for women and families affected by Cervical Check scandal

Women affected by the Cervical Check Scandal will get the opportunity to discuss the Scally report with the author for the first time this evening.

The private meeting with Dr Gabriel Scally in Dublin is the first of three meetings, with the others to be held in Cork and Galway.

221 women have been affected by the Cervical Check Scandal after their smear tests were misread.

To date, 21 of those women have died.

While the majority have chosen not to go public, they are still looking for justice, transparency and accountability.

When Dr. Scally's report was due to be published in September, the women involved were promised they would be briefed at the same time as the Dáil.

However, the day before the briefing was due, some aspects of the report were leaked, prompting the Taoiseach to say he was disgusted that reporters were shown the details of the report before those affected by the scandal.

Vicky Phelan, Stephen Teap and Lorraine Walsh did get to meet with Dr Scally to discuss the report but tonight's meeting is for the other women and their families to have the same chance to discuss the report and have their questions answered about the recommendations and an inquiry.

The meeting will be followed by further similar meetings in Cork and Galway. Those dates have yet to be confirmed.

Later this week, a support group is to be launched for anyone affected by the Cervical Check Scandal.

This story was updated with further details at 1.05pm.
