Hillary Clinton to receive honorary degree in Dublin

Hillary Clinton will receive an honorary degree from Trinity College Dublin today.

The former US Secretary of State and First Lady will then give a public lecture at the college.

That will be followed by a conversation with the university chancellor, Mary Robinson, where they'll discuss issues such as women in politics and the current challenges facing America.

Secretary Clinton met Taoiseach Leo Varadkar yesterday evening, where they talked about gender equality and world affairs.

The Workers’ Party will hold a protest today against the issuing of an honorary doctorate to Mrs Clinton.

"One of the main rationales given for awarding this doctorate, and one of the subjects which Clinton will address in her talk here today, is her own contribution to furthering the role of women in politics," said the party's Éilis Ryan.

As a woman involved in politics, I find this assumption that having any woman at all ‘at the table’ will improve outcomes for women generally, offensive and patronising.

"Hillary Clinton’s political role to date has been damaging to women, and to the societies she has claimed to represent - not positive."
