Michael Colgan has 'case to answer' in relation to Gate Theatre claims, independent review

An independent review has found that Gate Theatre's former artistic director Michael Colgan has "a case to answer in respect to dignity at work issues, abuse of power, and inappropriate behaviours."

56 people gave "credible and consistent" testimonies as part of independent expert Gaye Cunningham's investigation into Colgan's behaviour while in charge at the theatre.

14 recommendations have been set out to ensure that the Gate is a positive and safe place to work in the future.

They include limiting the tenure of artistic director, a policy of zero tolerance of abuse of power and comprehensive training for all managers.

In a statement this afternoon, the board said the review found "credible and consistent testimonies" of behaviours suggesting that Mr Colgan has a "case to answer" regarding "dignity at work issues, abuse of power and inappropriate behaviours".

The board says it is committed to implementing and following through on all recommendations.
