Cork school boy dies in 'personal tragedy'

Gardaí are treating as a personal tragedy the death of an 11-year-old school boy in Cork last night, writes Eoin English of the Irish Examiner.

The HSE is also providing supports at a primary school on the southside of the city today in the wake of the tragedy.

Emergency services were called to a house in the Boreenmanna Road area of the city around 8pm last night.

They found the 11-year-old boy in critical condition in an upstairs bedroom.

He was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Gardaí have launched an investigation to establish the full circumstances of the death but they have stressed that they are treating it as a personal tragedy.

A post mortem examination is expected to be carried out at CUH today to establish the exact cause of death, and its findings will form a key part of the file gardai will prepare for the coroner's court.

Meanwhile, the school where the boy was a pupil of sixth class is liaising with the HSE which has arranged for a number of supports to be put in place today.

Local clergy, resource teachers and psychologists from the National Educational Psychological Services will be on hand to help the children, teachers and parents.
