Update at 10pm: Reports suggest the victim has been discharged from hospital.

The tourist was set upon near her accommodation in Avignon in the south of France at the weekend.

It is understood the woman sustained injuries to her face and head by three men in a random attack.

A 25-year-old Irish woman has been hospitalised after an attacked in France.

It is understood the woman was beaten in the head by three men in a random attack in the town of Avignon in the South of the country.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has said it is aware of the case and is ready to provide consular assistance.

Local police have said the woman suffered injuries to her mouth, cheeks and nose and she is in a state of shock.
