Gardaí given more time to question man over Regency Hotel shooting

A judge has agreed to allow Gardaí more time to question a man about the Regency Hotel shooting.

David Byrne was shot dead in February when an armed gang burst into a boxing weigh-in at the Dublin hotel.

On Wednesday evening, 24-year-old Patrick Hutch of Champions Avenue, Dublin 1 was brought to a special sitting of Dublin District Court.

He is the only person to be charged with the murder of David Byrne.

Three other men are still being held as part of the Garda investigation.

One of them, a man in his 50s, has been in custody since his arrest on Wednesday.

Chief Superintendent Finbarr O’Brien today applied for a warrant to allow for his period of detention to be extended by 72 hours.

He said he had reasonable grounds to do so.

Judge Gráinne O’Neill said she was satisfied it was necessary and that the investigation is being conducted diligently and expeditiously.

Yesterday evening, the court extended the periods of detention for the two other men being questioned.
