A 16-year-old male has been arrested today in connection with a serious assault in Dublin city centre.

He was arrested this morning and is being detained at Pearse St Garda station under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 as amended.

An altercation occurred between 1.01am and 1.10am last Monday at the junction of Dame Lane and Trinity Street.

The victim, a 21-year-old man, received serious injuries to his face and was taken to St James's Hospital for treatment.

Gardaí in Pearse Street are appealing for witnesses to the incident, in particular a number of people who approached the ambulance as the injured male was receiving treatment, to contact them in Pearse St at 01 6669000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

Update 12.48pm: The victim of the attack is understood to be Andrew Cusack, the son of UCC Professor Stephen Cusack.

The expert on emergency medicine had previously appealed on social media for witnesses to the attack.
