Ross urges the Government not to engage in ‘orgy of farewell appointments’

The Government is being asked not to engage in an "orgy of farewell appointments" before the Dáil is dissolved.

It is after the Tánaiste Joan Burton made a number of appointments to state boards without using the public appointments process.

Under a loophole to the legislation ministers can appoint qualified people to State boards without them having to be interviewed.

Independent TD Shane Rosshas said he hopes the appointments will not continue.

“I’ll be asking the debate that the Government does indulge itself in an orgy of farewell appointments, which is an unfortunate tradition in this country,” said Deputy Ross.

“And that we don’t see this as a precursor of a large number of people using this loophole.”
