Icy roads as temperatures hit minus five last night

Temperatures remain below freezing in many areas this morning as icy roads pose a problem for motorists.

AA Roadwatch has said many routes are treacherous in counties, Donegal, Roscommon, Leitrim and Westmeath.

The advice is to slow down and increase your braking distance.

Met Éireann is forecasting severe frost as temperatures dropped to as low as minus five degrees last night - it is coldest in the Midlands.

However, Joan Blackburn from Met Eireann says it is an improving situation; “Temperatures still below zero in a lot of areas.

“People would want to be careful as they go out this morning, with frost and some black ice in places.

“Things will be improving over the next few hours, and there is patchy fog there aswell but once again, that will be lifting again over the next few hours.

“We have some cloud about which is helping some areas, but anywhere the skies are clear it certainly is frosty.”
