RSA issue weather warning to motorists
Motorists are being urged to take extra care on the roads this morning, following heavy rain last evening.
The Road Safety Authority has said poor conditions can be expected this weekend and it is urging drivers to allow extra time for all journeys.
Up to 25 millimetres of rain fell yesterday with spot flooding reported in several parts of the country.
The RSA's Brian Farrell has said speed is a particularly dangerous factor on motorways and dual-carriageways.
“The danger is of aquaplaning, that’s really where the tyres just lose traction with the road,” said Farrell.
“There’s a film of water that gets between the tyres and the road surface. Look, the only way to avoid that is to slow down.
“You really do need to give yourself time and space to react in an emergency because braking distances are increased.”
