A former soldier who killed a sex worker in Co. Westmeath has been jailed for eight years.

Jimmy Devaney of Millbrook Avenue, Monksland, Athlone was cleared of murdering Marie Greene in February 2011 but found guilty of manslaughter.

The father-of-three was a client of hers for years and told Gardaí she had been blackmailing him and threatening to tell his wife.

Speaking outside court, Marie’s mother Winnie said she would never be able to forgive him for what he did.

She said: "I hope Jimmy Devaney gets it very hard in prison and that he feels the way the bereaved felt."
